Termites
There are two types of termites most commonly found in the United States: subterranean termites and drywood termites. Subterranean termites are winged termites (also called “swarmers”) that congregate around a specific area. Further south and unlike subterranean termites, drywood termites do not need soil moisture to survive and dwell inside wood – making them difficult to recognize and more likely to do a large amount of damage. It is estimated that termites do 5 billion dollars in damage each year and homeowner or business insurance will not cover any cost for damage caused by termites or other wood destroying insects. Protect your home or business against both termite species by allowing Anderson Termite and Pest Solutions to develop a termite control plan that will eliminate every trace of termite activity from your home or business. Our highly trained technicians, that are licensed, insured, and state certified want you to enjoy a termite free home or business.
Powderpost Beetles
Powder Post Beetles (PPB) are the most common in Indiana and are only second in seasoned wood destroyers to the subterranean termite it is known in the Lyctus category of beetles. Powder post beetles attacks sapwood e.g. (oak, hickory, ash, walnut) they require a high content of moisture typically 20% or more to survive in wood. Most damage occurs in crawl space joist, sill plates ,header boards basements, sheds, barns, etc. because it is the most likely areas of structures to be vulnerable to moisture and exposed to outside elements. Example of damage looks like shotgun holes in the wood about the size of pencil lead and any jarring or movement above the wood will leave a fine like powdery residue thus this is how it got its name powder post beetles. Adults live in wood for months up to 10 years and when they emerge in late winter through late summer the damage is done. This is where you need a true professional to evaluate and eliminate the problem. Call Anderson Termite And Pest Solutions today!!!
Carpenter Bees
Unlike bumble bees, carpenter bees are solitary and do not live in nest or colonies. Adult carpenter bees over winter live in abandoned nest tunnels where they have stored limited pollen to survive the colder temperatures. The bees that survive the winter will emerge in the spring to feed on nectar, mate and build galleries they may use previous made galleries or may excavate new ones. The female carpenter bees chew circular holes through the wood to make individual galleries to lay eggs and protect there larvae as they develop. They prefer soft unpainted and old wood but will build in hard wood also such as decks or fences new galleries may extend ten feet wide but usually are only 4-6 feet. Male carpenter bees do not sting but will hover near the gallery to scare any predator away but in reality they can do no harm females are most likely with the queen and very rarely seen unless provoked and can sting. They are wood destroying insects also and need to be stopped not only are they a big nuisance but can do damage to your property don’t let this happen to you call Anderson Termite And Pest Solutions today.
Carpenter Ants
Carpenter Ants vary in size and color but are usually ( 1/4 -1/2 inch) and blackish and one of the most difficult to control. Occasionally, swarms of winged carpenter ant offspring will emerge inside a home usually in the spring and are a sure sign that a colony is nesting somewhere in a structure or your home. Unlike the subterranean termite carpenter ants groove through wood while hollowing it out for nesting. They excavate galleries in the wood which will appear to have a smooth sand paper appearance however wood that has been damaged by carpenter ants has no mud just wood shavings made while excavating the galleries. Carpenters ants can do extremely a lot of damage not to just your home but to out buildings, sheds, trees, etc. and cost you thousands of dollars in damage.
